Background
Formation during the Omnic Crisis Overwatch was created during the Omnic Crisis, a worldwide war between humans and rogue AI-controlled robots called omnics. Governments were losing badly, so the United Nations formed Overwatch as an elite international task force to turn the tide. Two key founding figures were: Gabriel Reyes — originally the leader Jack Morrison — later became the public face and commander They were joined by other notable members like Ana Amari, Reinhardt Wilhelm, and Torbjörn Lindholm. Rise to global peacekeepers After ending the Omnic Crisis, Overwatch became a global peacekeeping force, handling threats beyond the scope of normal governments—terrorism, rogue AI, and high-tech criminal groups. They were widely celebrated and symbolized hope and unity. Internal conflict and downfall Over time, things started to fall apart: Tensions grew between Reyes and Morrison, leading to a split in leadership Black-ops operations (like Blackwatch) blurred ethical lines Accusations of corruption and lack of accountability mounted This all culminated in a massive explosion at Overwatch HQ, where Morrison and Reyes were presumed dead. In reality: Morrison became Soldier: 76 Reyes became Reaper Disbandment Following the scandal, the UN passed the Petras Act, which officially disbanded Overwatch and banned its operations. Legacy Even after disbandment, Overwatch’s legacy lives on. Former agents continue to act independently, and characters like Winston work to reform the organization and bring it back in response to new global threats.
